UV Index Forecast Map
What is the UV Index?
The UV Index provides important information to help you plan your outdoor activities in ways that prevent overexposure to the sun's rays. The UV Index is issued daily as part of a national project, and was developed by the National Weather Service (NWS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The UV Index describes the next day's predicted levels of exposure to UV sunlight. The Index goes from 0 to 10+, with larger numbers indicating high exposures. The correspondence between index number and exposure level is shown here.
Index Number...........Exposure Level0-2.......................Minimal
3-4.......................Low
5-6.......................Moderate
7-9.......................High
10+.......................Very High
You should always take precautions against overexposure, but it is most important to take precautions when the index is 5 or greater. This UV Index is NOT intended for use by seriously sun-sensitive individuals. Some medications and some diseases, such as Lupus Erythematosus, cause serious sun-sensitivity . Persons taking certain medications or having certain diseases should consult their doctor about additional precautions they may need to take.
